- De Grandval wrote this suite in 1872, for the influential French flutist and Paris Conservatory teacher Paul Taffanel. Taffanel performed it several times with Camille Saint- Saëns (de Grandval’s teacher) at concerts of the Société Nationale de Musique. Taffanel also made it a regular item in his recital repertoire.1
- In his biography, Taffanel: Genius of the Flute, Edward Blakeman reports that this Suite was “the first direct response to Taffanel’s particular style of flute playing.”2 Taffanel’s style went on to inspire works by many French composers, including Fauré.
- This suite was published by Simon Richault in Paris in 1876. The publication was dedicated to Paul Taffanel.3
