- Lullaby and Doina was written in 2001 for flute, clarinet, and strings and uses material from Golijov’s film score for The Man Who Cried (2000).
- The film explores the journey of a Russian Jewish girl in search of her father, and ultimately her heritage, amid the political upheaval of early and mid-20th century Europe.
- The “Lullaby” consists of a set of variations on a Yiddish lullaby that the composer wrote for the film. The piece then transitions into a “Doina,” a rhapsodic instrumental piece adapted from a Romanian shepherd-song genre.
- Lullaby and Doina was commissioned and premiered by (as well as dedicated to) the Boston Symphony Chamber Players.1
