Overture in D Major

Composer: GLINKA, Mikhail
  • This is an early work by Glinka, composed between c. 1822-6. At the time, Glinka had recently begin private lessons with Charles Mayer,1 a German composer and pianist who maintained a significant teaching studio in St. Petersburg.2
    • Mayer had been a student of John Field. During his teaching career in St. Petersburg, Mayer is said to have taught 800 students. 
  • Around this time, Glinka was also studying operatic overtures by Cherubini, Mozart, and Beethoven.3
