Symphony No.3 “Ilya Murometz,” Op.42

  • Glière’s massive programmatic symphony, Symphony No. 3 “Ilya Murometz” [pronounced EE-lee-uh MOOR-uh-mets] was written between 1909-11 and based on the life of Russian folk hero Ilya Murometz.
  • The symphony consists of four movements, each depicting a part of Murometz’s legent:
    1. Wandering pilgrims. Ilia Mourometz and Sviatogor
    2. Solovéï the brigand
    3. The palace of Prince Vladimir
    4. The exploits and petrification of Ilia Mourometz
  • Glière dedicated the symphony to Aleksandr Glazunov.1
