- Glière’s massive programmatic symphony, Symphony No. 3 “Ilya Murometz” [pronounced EE-lee-uh MOOR-uh-mets] was written between 1909-11 and based on the life of Russian folk hero Ilya Murometz.
- The symphony consists of four movements, each depicting a part of Murometz’s legent:
- Wandering pilgrims. Ilia Mourometz and Sviatogor
- Solovéï the brigand
- The palace of Prince Vladimir
- The exploits and petrification of Ilia Mourometz
- Glière dedicated the symphony to Aleksandr Glazunov.1
