- Ginastera’s ballet Estancia, Op. 8 was commissioned in 1941 by Lincoln Kirstein for his dance troupe, American Ballet Caravan. It was one of Ginastera’s early works after graduating from conservatory in Argentina in 1935.
- The American Ballet Caravan disbanded in 1942, and for this reason, the ballet was not staged for a decade. Ginastera extracted a concert suite from it (his Opus 8a), which was first performed in Buenos Aires in 1943.
- The Estancia ballet is one of Ginastera’s Argentinian nationalist works. It incorporates excerpts (spoken and sung) from Martím Fierro (1872), an Argentinian epic poem. The ballet itself portrays scenes from various times of day on a ranch.1
