- Foss’ Renaissance Concerto for flute and orchestra was written in 1985. The work was commissioned and premiered by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and flutist Carol Wincenc under the baton of Foss, Music Director Emeritus.
- Foss noted that the flute “was a favorite instrument in the Renaissance and Baroque eras…” and consequently inspired his musical “handshake across the centuries.”
- Four movements:
- I. Intrada (quotes music by Byrd)
- II. Baroque Interlude (quotes music by Rameau)
- III. Recitative (quotes music by Monteverdi)
- IV. Jouissance (quotes music by David Melvill)1
