- Originally composed as an “Andante” for cello and organ, Fauré wrote the final version of his Romance in 1894. The change of name to “Romance” better suited the songlike quality of the music.1
- Fauré dedicated the work to cellist Jules Griset. Griset was also the dedicatee by Saint-Saëns, Chabrier, and Lili Boulanger.
