Symphony No. 3 in g minor, Op. 36

Composer: FARRENC, Louise
  • Farrenc composed this symphony in 1847.1
  • This symphony premiered on April 22, 1849, as part of a prestigious subscription concert series by the Société des concerts du Conservatoire. The series usually featured classic, established works (especially Beethoven), so this symphony’s excellent reception was a significant success.2
  • The symphony went on to enjoy further performances in Paris, as well as performances in Brussels and Prague.3

“There is no musician who does not remember the symphony that Madame Farrenc had performed at the Conservatory, a strong and spirited work in which the brilliance of the melodies contends with the variety of the harmonies.”

Music critic Adolphe Giacomelli, France Musicale, 18524
  • Farrenc composed a total of three symphonies, all in the 1840s, and all of them remained unpublished during her lifetime.5
