Main page on Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance Marches Op. 39
- “Pomp and Circunstance” March no.3 was composed in 1904 and premiered under the composer’s baton in 1905.1
- Elgar dedicated this march to his friend Ivor Atkins (1869-1953), organist of Worcester Cathedral. Atkins had recently arranged for a performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius to take place at the Worcester Festival.2
“The new march is thrilling—the most pacific friends were ready to fight!”
Alice Elgar, after a performance of this March by the LSO in 19053
