- Elgar dedicated this piece to S.S. Sanford, a professor at Yale. Elgar visited Yale in 1905 to accept an honorary doctorate8 (on which occasion the Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 march was played, launching an American tradition associating the piece with academic ceremonies).5
