Symphony No. 6 in D Major, Op. 60

  • Dvořák wrote Symphony No. 6 in D Major in just a matter of weeks in 1880.
  • Four movements:
    1. Allegro non tanto
    2. Adagio
    3. Scherzo (Furiant)
    4. Finale. Allegro con spirito
  • Fun fact – while the composer’s sixth symphony, the work was known for a long time as the “First” because it was the first of Dvořák’s symphonies to be published.
  • Listen for – Dvořák’s characteristic incorporation of Czech folk music in the fiery third movement.
  • Though never explicitly stated, many speculate that Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony was inspired by Brahms’s Second Symphony, also written in D Major and sharing a similar mood and warmth.1
