Silent Woods, Op. 68, No. 5

  • “Klid” (Silent Woods) was originally the 5th movement of Dvořák’s Opus 68, a set of pieces for piano four-hands called Ze Šumavy (“From the Bohemian Forest”). Dvořák composed this set between 1883-4.1
  • Dvořák arranged “Silent Woods” for cello and piano for a farewell concert tour of Bohemia he undertook in 1892. He was about to move to the USA to teach at the National Conservatory of Music.2
  • Dvořák brought his friends Ferdinand Lachner (violinist) and Hanus Wilhan (cellist) on his farewell tour, and they performed Dvořák’s piano trios with the composer at the piano, as well as solo pieces for each string player, like this piece.3
  • Dvořák arranged “Silent Woods” for cello and orchestra in 1893.4
