- Rusalka is an opera (Dvořák called it a “lyric fairy tale”) composed in 1900.1
- Rusalka is a story of a mermaid or water spirit, based on several literary sources, including Undine (1811), a fairy tale novella by Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué about a water spirit who marries a knight in order to gain a human soul, and “The Little Mermaid” (1837) by Hans Christian Andersen.2
- In Slavic folklore, a “rusalka” is a (typically feminine) water nymph inhabiting either a lake or river.
