- Written in 1880, Dvořák’s seven Gypsy Songs for voice and piano were written at the request of Vienna Court Opera tenor Gustav Walter. Dvořák chose to set poetry by Adolf Heyduk, who drew on Slovak and Czech folk sources and then translated them into German. Dvořák published both the German and Czech versions of the songs.
