- Fennimore and Gerda is an “opera in 11 pictures” with libretto and music by Delius, based on J.P. Jacobsen’s novel Niels Lyhne.1
- The opera premiered in Frankfurt in 1919.2
- Fennimore and Gerda was the last of Delius’s many operas.3
- The story is told in a set of eleven vignettes presenting snapshots of the characters’ lives over the course of many years. There are orchestral interludes between many of the vignettes.4

- This Intermezzo was extracted in 1945 by Eric Fenby, Delius’s music assistant, from the introductions to the scenes with Gerda near the end of the opera. 5
