- Corelli’s 12 sonate a tre, Op. 3 (12 Trio Sonatas) is a collection of twelves sonate da chiesa (church sonatas) published in Rome in 1689.1
- Most of the sonatas in this collection contain four movements. This structure was Corelli’s standard practice with church sonatas by this time: his chamber sonatas (sonate da camera) vary more in structure, with anywhere from three to five movements.2
- Like most of Corelli’s works, this set was reprinted frequently and became popular throughout Europe. One example of its dissemination is J.S. Bach’s quotation of a melody from Corelli’s Op.3, No. 4 in his Fugue in b minor BWV 579.3
