- This concerto premiered at the Norfolk Connecticut Music Festival on June 4, 1912.1
- Coleridge-Taylor dedicated this concerto to American violinist Maud Powell. She was the soloist at the work’s premiere.2
- This concerto was Coleridge-Taylor’s last major composition. He died on September 1, 1912, less than three months after its premiere.3
- Coleridge-Taylor’s original concept was to base the concerto on melodies from spirituals. However, in the end he decided to use original themes which are sometimes reminiscent of spirituals, much like Dvorák did in his “New World” Symphony.4
