Ethiopia Saluting the Colours, Op. 51

  • The orchestral march Ethiopia Saluting the Colours was written in 1902 and is based on a poem of the same name by Walt Whitman. Whitman’s poem is set during the American Civil War and references General Sherman’s March to the Sea.
    • In the poem, an “ancient” enslaved woman named Ethiopia speaks to the Union soldiers.1
