- Schumann had recently dedicated his Kreisleriana to Chopin, which prompted Chopin to return the favor.
- Fun fact – According to Robert Schumann, Chopin was the first to the word “Ballade” to music. Previously, the term was viewed as a literary genre.
- Schumann also speculated that Chopin was inspired by the poetry of Adam Mickiewicz when writing Ballade No. 2, though this was never confirmed by the composer.2
