- Chabrier’s Prélude pastorale (1888) is his orchestration of his Prélude for piano 4 hands (1883).
- Chabrier composed Prélude and Rondo in 1883 for piano 4 hands. Later he orchestrated both mvts: the prelude became Prélude pastorale and the rondo became Joyeuse marche (aka Marche française).
- In 1888, Chabrier himself conducted the premiere of this piece, along with the Marche française, Habanera and several others of his works.
1“A superb instrumental piece, built on a remarkably well-designed theme.”
