Lamento

Composer: CHABRIER, Emmanuel
  • Lamento was composed in 1874, and it premiered in Paris in 1878.1
  • This piece was premiered by the Société Nationale de Musique, a Paris concert society for promoting new French music, founded 1871 by Saint-Saëns.2 Chabrier was a member.3
  • At the time Chabrier composed Lamento, his wife Alice was gradually losing her sight, which may have influenced the poignant nature of this work, and the manner in which the music gradually fades away at the end.4
