Sonata No. 16

Composer: CASTELLO, Dario
  • Castello’s Sonata Decima Sesta à 4. per Stomenti d’arco. [Violino, 2 Violette, Viola] from Sonate concertate in stil modern, libro secondo (“Sonata 16 in 4 Parts for bowed instruments, from Concerted Sonatas in the Modern Style”)1 was published in 1644. 2
  • In This Recording: the parts originally indicated for strings are played by wind instruments.3
    • According to Grove’s, Castello’s instrumental writing is more idiomatic for wind instruments than for strings (probably because he was wind player.)4
