- Brahms composed this concerto in 1878 for his friend Joseph Joachim.1
- The premiere took place on Jan. 1, 1879 at the Gewandhausaal in Leipzig. Joachim played the violin solo and Brahms conducted the orchestra.2
- The final movement of this concerto is an example of Brahms’s fascination with what was called the style hongrois, which his Grove article defines as “a blending of Hungarian musical gestures and gypsy performing style.” Read more about Brahms’s introduction to this style in our page on the Hungarian Dances.3
