Soir, Matin, Op. 76

  • This is a two-movement work for piano trio (violin, cello, piano). The first movement is “Soir” (Evening) and the second movement is “Matin” (Morning).1
  • This work was first published in 1907.2
  • Bonis dedicated “Soir” to a Mlle Foltzer, and “Matin” to the Trio Chaigneau,3 a chamber ensemble made up of three sisters.
    • The Chaigneau Trio was founded in 1895. Its members were violinist Suzanne Chaigneau, her twin sister, cellist Marguerite Chaigneau, and their younger sister, pianist Thérèse Chaigneau. The trio toured Europe and appeared with the likes of Joseph Joachim and Pablo Casals. The sisters also formed their own teaching studio and concert series. During the First World War,  Thérèse and Marguerite formed a charity organization to assist musicians and their families.4
