Rob Roy Overture

Composer: BERLIOZ, (Louis-) Hector
  • Written in 1831, Berlioz’s Rob Roy Overture (official title:
Intrata di Rob-Roy MacGregor) is a single movement work for orchestra based on the novel by Sir Walter Scott.1
    • Rob Roy MacGregor was a historical Scottish figure who became known as a Jacobite legend for his resistance against the British.
  • Written shortly after the premiere of his successful Symphonie fantastique, Berlioz was, unfortunately, never satisfied with his Rob Roy Overture. However, he did recycle some of the musical material from the overture for a later work, Harold en Italie.2
