- Written in 1999, Bennett’s Reflections on a 16th-Century Tune was–you guessed it–based on a tune from the 16th century: the French popular song, “A l’ombre d’un buissone” (In the shade of a bush).
- “A l’ombre d’un buissone” was first printed in 1536.
- The work comprises the main theme, four variations, and a finale (six movements total).
- Fun fact – the third variation (mvmt 4) was dedicated to Peter Warlock.1
