- Barrios collected four works in his Suite Andina (Andean Suite). The grouping was likely made after each of movements was composed independently, because there is no evidence that Barrios performed these as a set.1
Movements
1. Aconquija (Aire de Quena)
- Aconquija is named for an Andean peak in Argentina.2
- The subtitle, Aire de Quena, refers to a type of indigenous Andean flute. The opening motif is based upon a theme Barrios heard an indigenous musician perform upon a quena.3
- One of Barrios’s manuscripts refers to this piece as “Popular Andean Air – harmonized by A. Barrios.”4
2. Córdoba
- This work is named for the city in Argentina.
- Barrios recorded this piece in 1924.5
3. Aire de Zamba
- The zamba is a Argentinian folk dance.6
- Barrios made two recordings of this movement: one in 1924, one in 1928.7
4. Cueca (Aire chileno)
- Barrios wrote this work by 1925; the first known reference to it is a concert program dated October 18 of that year.
- The cueca, also known as the zamacueca, is a folk dance from Chile.8
