- Barrios composed his first version of this piece in 1921 in Montevideo, Uruguay. This version contained the present work’s last two movements. The composer added the work’s opening movement in 1938.
- The opening movement is entitled Preludio (Saudade). “Saudade” is a Portuguese word indicative of nostalgia. Thus the title simultaneously expresses looking forward and looking back – a fascinating concept to attach to a prelude written after the suite it prefaces.
- The second movement, Andante religioso, was inspired by the cathedral of San José in Montevideo.1
