  • Barber wrote Commando March in 1943, his first and only work for wind band.
    • In 1942, after the U.S. entered WWII, Barber joined the army and quickly began writing music for the war effort. Commando March was the first result of this new source of inspiration.
  • Commando March was premiered by the Army Air Forces Technical Command Training Band in 1943 and quickly became popular around the country.
  • Barber adapted the piece for orchestra for the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the request of Serge Koussevitzky.1
