- Barber composed his Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra, op. 22, in 1945.1
- This piece was commissioned at request of Serge Koussevitsky (1874-1951) for cellist Raya Garbousova (1909-1997) and premiered by Boston SO.2
- To prepare to compose, Barber invited Garbousova to play for him so he could study her playing and the instrument. 3
- Barber often did this when writing concertos – he asked Vladimir Horowitz to play for him when he was writing his piano concerto.4
