Cantata BWV 208: “Sheep May Safely Graze”

  • This is an arrangement of a soprano aria (Shafe können sicher weiden) from Bach’s cantata BWV 208, Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd! (“What pleases me is the lively hunt!” c1713).1
  • Story: the cantata presents a mythical allegory/dialogue between the hunter goddess Diana, Endymion, and the god Pan. Pan, ruler of the forest, represents Duke Christian, who is portrayed as a caring ruler.3
