Cantata BWV 147: “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”

Composer: BACH, Johann Sebastian
  • This is a movement from Bach’s Cantata BWV 147 Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (“Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life”) (composed 1723).1
  • This movement is based on the chorale Werde munter, mein Gemüte by Johann Schop (c1590-c.1665).2
  • This movement was originally written for choir and orchestra. It appears twice in the cantata: at the middle, and it reprises at the end, with a different text.3
  • Listen for: chorale melody appearing phrase by phrase as a cantus firmus over Bach’s countermelody.4
