- In its original version, this is an organ chorale prelude for manuals, BWV 721. The year of composition is unknown.1
- The composer of the chorale melody is unknown, but the chorale text (1524) is by Erhart Hegenwalt (fl. 16th C.), a contemporary of Martin Luther. The text is an adaptation of penitential Psalm 51.2
