8 Overtures in 8 Parts (1751): Overture no. 3 in G Major

Composer: ARNE, Thomas Augustine
  • This overture is from Arne’s musical play Henry and Emma (1749); based on Henry and Emma, or The Nut-Brown Maid (1709) by Matthew Prior (1664-1721) (itself based on a Middle English poem).1
  • Story: a disguised lord tests his sweetheart’s love by pretending to be a criminal in exile and challenging her to stay with him.2
  • Style: Italian fast-slow-fast structure, familiar from concertos.3
