- Written in 1873 to celebrate the marriage of Archduchess Gisela Louise Maria (daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph) and Prince Leopold of Bavaria.
- The waltz also marked Strauss’s debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which had previously dismissed association with the composer due to his “light” music.1
- *Confusingly, there is an operetta called Wiener Blut which premiered in 1899 and took its title from Strauss’s popular waltz. While the composer approved the operetta using his music, he did not participate in its creation. Strauss died four months before the premiere.2
