  • Elegy was originally composed for cello and piano in 1943; there is also a viola version.
  • Carter arranged this work for strings in 1952. The string orchestra version premiered in 1953 in New York.1
  • Carter composed the original cello and piano version of this piece in the same year he began his WWII service in the Office of War Information (1943-4).2
