- Strauss’s waltz, Nordseebilder, was written in 1879, representing the composer’s later “mature” compositions.
- The piece was inspired by a visit by the composer and his wife to the town of Wyk on the island of Föhr. The various moods of the North Sea, from calm to tempestuous, are portrayed in Strauss’s resulting waltz.1
