- In response to a commission by the Royal Philharmonic Society1,Sir Hubert Parry wrote his Symphonic Variations in e minor in 1897 and conducted the premiere in London that same year.
- Despite only running approximately 12 minutes, Parry’s work gives the illusion of four movements in this set of 27 variations for orchestra.2
- Given the popularity of Dvořák’s Symphonic Variations in England in the previous decade, one wonders whether the Czech composer’s work provided a source of influence for Parry.
