- Viardot’s cataloguer Christin Heitmann reports that Ivan Turgenev mentioned these pieces in an 1866 letter:
“Madame Viardot thanks you for your greeting – this winter she has composed a great deal – but this winter, nothing but instrumental music – little pieces for violin and piano. You see, her son Paul is making great progress on the violin.”

- The composer dedicated this set to her son, Paul Viardot,4 who was a violinist. Paul was ten years old when this set was published.5
