- This solo piano work was likely composed before 1885. I was able to access the date of a Russian edition of the score, but not a date for the work’s composition.
- The piece’s aesthetic debt to dance is seen in its subtitle, air de ballet. Chaminade composed many works with this designation, as well as “ballet symphonique,” Callirhoë.1
- Pierrette is a female counterpart to the sad clown Pierrot in the commedia dell’arte tradition. Several Chaminade pieces take inspiration from the commedia dell’arte, including Arlequine, Op. 55, and a movement from her Suite d’orchestre No.1, Op.20, “Scherzo – Columbine.”
