Born in Tokyo, Japan, April 7, 1961
- Tanaka studied at the Tōhō Gakuen School of Music, Toyko, where her teachers included Akira Miyoshi. She studied subsequently in France and in Florence, where her teachers included Luciano Berio.1
- Karen Tanaka currently teaches Composition and Experimental Sound Practices at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California.2
