- Liszt worked on this concerto for many years: the earliest surviving thematic sketches are from 1832, and he finally finished the work in 1856.1
- This is Liszt’s earliest surviving concerto, but according to his father’s records, Franz Liszt had already written two piano concertos by the time he was fifteen. Both of those early concertos are lost.2
- Liszt completed and premiered this work while he was working as Kapellmeister to the Grand Duke of Weimar.3 Read more about that here.
- Liszt was the soloist in this concerto’s premiere, which took place on February 17, 1855 in Weimar. He was joined by the Staatskapelle Orchestra, conducted by Hector Berlioz.4
- Liszt dedicated this concerto to British piano virtuoso Henry Charles Litolff.5
