Summer Evening

  • Kodály composed his tone poem Nyári este (Summer Evening) in 1906. 
  • This was one of Kodály’s early works. He wrote it while he was a student at the Budapest Academy of Music. 
  • Summer Evening earned Kodály a scholarship to study abroad when it was performed at the Budapest Academy of Music’s Diploma Concert on October 22, 1906. 
  • At the request of Arturo Toscanini, Kodály revised Summer Evening in 1929-30. The revised version premiered on April 3, 1930, in a concert by the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Toscanini.
