- An der schönen, blauen Donau, Op. 314 (composed 1867) started life as a choral waltz which Strauss wrote for the Wiener Männergesang-Verein (Vienna Men’s Choral Association).1
- Strauss conducted the Wiener Männergesang-Verein in the premiere, on February 15, 1867, in Vienna.2
- The waltz’s international popularity gained a strong boost when Strauss and his orchestra presented it at the Austrian Embassy Ball in 1867.3
