Romanian Rhapsodies, Op. 11

  • Enesco composed both his set of two Romanian Rhapsodies in 1901.1
  • Throughout his life, Enesco was frustrated that the Rhapsodies gained huge popularity and overshadowed the rest of his work; he felt like audiences didn’t understand his full range as a composer.
    • The Rhapsodies were very early works of Enesco; he was only 20 when he completed them.
  • The Rhapsodies premiered on March 18, 1903, in Bucharest. The composer conducted the Romanian Athenaeum Orchestra in this performance.2
