- Saint-Saëns composed his Romance for Flute (or violin) and orchestra in D-flat in 1871. It was published in 1874.1
- Saint-Saëns wrote this piece for his friend Paul Taffanel, flute professor at the Paris Conservatory.2
- In addition to being a composer himself, Taffanel is considered the father of the modern French school of flute playing (which has now become standard worldwide).3
