- This piece was composed for violin and piano in 1882.1
- Lalo was himself a violinist and he composed this as an encore piece for his own concert use.2
- Although he and his family had been in France for several generations,3 Lalo’s family was originally of Spanish descent, something which colors both this piece and Lalo’s more famous Symphonie espagnole.4
- Fun fact: One of Lalo’s best friends and strongest musical influences was the Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, for whom Lalo composed many of his violin pieces, including the Symphonie espagnole and the Violin Concerto in F Major.5
