- Herbert’s Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 8 premiered in Stuttgart in 1884 with Herbert as the cello soloist.
- The work was not published during Herbert’s lifetime, and it remained in manuscript until the 1980s.
- Herbert had studied cello at the Stuttgart Conservatory before moving to the USA in 1886. He continued to perform in the USA, as a cello soloist and a member of the New York String Quartet.1
