  • Harty wrote Piano Concerto in b minor in 1922 while visiting his friend and mentor, composer, pianist, and pedagogue Michele Esposito, in Italy. Harty dedicated the work to Esposito.
  • The piano concerto is written in a Romantic style, with the lingering influence of Rachmaninov.
  • Listen for: the allusion to the Irish tune, “The Wearing of the Green,” in the third movement.
  • Three movements:
    1. Allegro risoluto
    2. Tranquillo e calmo
    3. Con brio e vivace1
