- Weber’s Clarinet Quintet in B-flat Major is a work for clarinet and string quartet written between 1811-1815.1
- The piece premiered in Munich in 1815 with Heinrich Baermann playing clarinet (In addition to being a prominent clarinet virtuoso of the day, Baermann was also a friend of the composer. The two musicians would collaborate on several works together).2
- The quintet consists of 4 movements:
- I. Allegro
- II. Fantasia. Adagio
- III. Menuetto
- IV. Rondo. Allegro3
- While Weber was inspired by Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, Weber detracted from Mozart in making his quintet essentially a mini clarinet concerto (Mozart’s work had more balance between the clarinet and strings).4
